Reaction injection moulding (RIM)

Reaction injection moulding (RIM) is a short to medium run production process utalising Polyurethane resins. The temperature and pressure within the mould cavity are lower than with conventional processes allowing larger components to be produced from relatively inexpensive tooling. The process also has cost advantages for smaller parts where limited quantities are required.

The materials can be formulated with a wide range of properties, rigid or flexible, solid or foamed, with a density as low as 40 kg/m. Rigid self-skinning materials, where the surfaces are hard and solid enclosing a foam core, can be moulded to produce lightweight but rigid components that can be paint finished.
